Ignacio Payá representing IFOP, participated in a Jack mackerel Management Evaluation Strategy workshop at OROP-PS

And advised the Chilean delegation in setting jack mackerel catch quota for 2023

Ignacio Payá, in charge of horse mackerel stock evaluation at IFOP and member of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization Scientific Committee (OROP-PS, www.sprfmo.int), participated in Management Strategy Evaluation workshop (EEM) of horse mackerel carried out in Ecuador during February 2023. Now that SPRFMO has been successful in its strategy for jack mackerel stock recovery it is proposed to identify the best management strategy through EEM. The workshop was organized by the Scientific Committee and the Commission, and its objectives were:

To introduce Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) and the purpose of seeking EMS in the SPRFMO.

To provide a first introduction to how EEM works.

To provide to managers and stakeholders a necessary background. To conduct a question and answer session for managers and stakeholders. IFOP’s participation was focused on: Advising Fisheries and Aquaculture Undersecretariat , representing the Chilean delegation interests, and acting as spokesperson for the Chilean delegation.

After EEM workshop, the 11th Commission was held where the jack mackerel catch 2023 quota was set and its distribution by country. To agree on the position of the Chilean delegation in the Commission, coordination meetings were held. The Chilean delegation was made up of 20 participants including government members ,public and private sectors (IFOP) researchers , fishing industry and representatives of the artisanal sector.

Ignacio Payá explained and clarified to Chilean delegation the results of the SPRFMO Scientific Committee on the status of the horse mackerel stock, catch quota and stock biomass projections for coming years.

IFOP’s participation is part of the activities of “Status and possibilities of biologically sustainable exploitation of national horse mackerel, Arica and Parinacota region to Los Lagos Region, year 2023” and “Scientific Consulting on International Fisheries Matters” projects contracted by Fisheries and Aquaculture Undersecretariat with IFOP’s Resource Evaluation Department (DER).
