IFOP’s Abate Molina Scientific Ship sailed
September 21st, 2017In order to evaluate bio-oceanographic conditions and evaluation of the spawning stock of anchovy among the regions of Arica and Antofagasta
At midnight on Friday, September 15, from the port of Valparaíso, scientific vessel Abate Molina from IFOP set sail to the north of our country.
It sailed to monitor bio-oceanographic conditions and to quantify by means of the egg production method (MPH) northern Chile anchovy spawning biomass, from Arica to Punta Carrizalillo. The chief of the cruise is Jorge Angulo, IFOP researcher and the captain of the vessel Ivan Giakoni
Angulo explained “to know the condition of spawning stock in small pelagics and their reproductive potential, one of the used techniques is Egg Production Method (MPH). The application of this method has the advantage of allowing an estimation of the independent spawning biomass and providing complementary information on the state of the stock (fecundity, proportion of mature fish, egg mortality rate), also constituting a source of auxiliary information for calibrate the indirect evaluations. For this reason MPH application in the anchoveta spawning stock evaluation is considered a fundamental tool for this resource fishery management in the northern zone of Chile, so the method has been applied in this fishery since 1992 .
With the purpose of obtaining information on the oceanographic conditions in the study area and the necessary data to determine anchovy spawning stock biomass, which together with other important biological-fishing aspects feed the stock assessment model, this is the reason why this cruise is performed during the maximum reproductive activity of the species period “.
