In Iquique, a team of professionals from the Instituto de Fomento Pesquero met with the association of shipbuilders and industrial fisheries from North ASIPNOR, the session was aimed at explaining how gonadal and ovarian indices are established, whose values determine the anchovy closures.

Eliana Escudero, Head of IFOP Iquique, explained: “The indexes are established in a monitoring of the spawning activity in anchovy, through representative sampling on board and landings, by using histological methods developed in our laboratories by the researcher, Eduardo Díaz. He makes a weekly report to the Subsecretaría de Pesca (Subpesca), where the values obtained are reported, and according to certain established ranges, anchovy closure can be determined.

The meeting was requested by ASIPNOR and we agreed since IFOP is responsible for conducting research on resources and it is important that users become familiar with the processes, have no doubts about our results and see that our research is seriously transparent and responsible”
