Overview

The Hydrobiological Health Department was established in IFOP as a way to face the new challenges product of Chile´s great development in aquaculture and as a way to preserve the health heritage.

This unit is formed by a multidisciplinary group of professionals and technicians, including Veterinarians, Marine Biologists, Biochemists, Microbiologists, and Aquaculture technicians, amongst others.

The departments applied research is carried out along with a public and strategic role, through the following research lines:

  • Determine actions necessary to prevent, control, and eventually eradicate diseases in aquatic species.
  • Conduct studies on issues of identification of pathogens and their impacts.
  • Assess and develop new therapeutic approaches and conduct applied studies to support the protection of the health, genetic heritage and biodiversity.
  • Develop approaches to the study of epidemiological factors and areas, and their dynamics in time and space.
  • Generate relevant information for decision making on the authorization and regulation of the use of drugs and vaccines, as well as other elements that may eventually enter the aquatic environment.
