Jonathon Barrington, Executive Secretary of the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP), meets with professionals from the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP).

During the meeting, held at IFOP’s facilities in Valparaíso, various aspects of Chile’s commitment to the conservation of albatrosses and petrels were discussed, with a particular focus on measures to prevent and reduce seabird bycatch in national fisheries.

Mr. Barrington’s visit to IFOP was part of a broader trip to Chile that included a visit to the city of Punta Arenas, where he toured potential venues for the Agreement’s upcoming Advisory Committee meeting, scheduled to take place in Chile in August 2027.

Luis Adasme—an IFOP researcher, member of the Chilean Seabird Working Group (Biodiversity Scientific Committee), and Chile’s official representative to the ACAP Seabird Bycatch Working Group—commented on the importance of the visit and the topics addressed: “The visit to IFOP by ACAP Executive Secretary Jonathon Barrington provided an opportunity to learn more about ACAP and discuss the work being done regarding seabird bycatch and the progress of Ecological Risk Assessments (ERAs) in the region, as well as to explore potential future collaboration between ACAP and IFOP in this area. Chile contributes to international efforts aimed at conserving albatrosses and petrels—species facing various threats in the ocean, including bycatch associated with certain fishing activities.”
