Yesterday, November 5th, in Puerto Varas, with the assistance of regional authorities, the ISSESR7 International Symposium was inaugurated. It is being held in Chile for the first time. 70 exhibitors are participating.

This symposium focuses on the dissemination and transfer of the sciences of stock improvement, restocking and conservation assisted by aquaculture to improve the sustainability of the marine economy. In its seventh, and at the same time, first version in Latin America, it addresses with special emphasis on conservation and restoration aquaculture for the improvement of benthic species.

Gonzalo Pereira, IFOP Executive Director, spoke about the Congress: “IFOP is the organizer of this international event, the first one was held in 1997 in Norway and IFOP has participated in all subsequent ones, in this version we are the hosts, for us this symposium is relevant because it deals with the issues of restocking and assistance to aquaculture, this is in line with the development of IFOP activities aimed at sustainable fishing and aquaculture. A congress of this type with 70 registered researchers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, Chile, and the USA, is very valuable for our own researchers as it collects the experiences in these issues that have been carried out in other countries. And at the same time, foreign researchers are interested in the processes that have been developed in Chile in these matters, which have been very successful, so without a doubt this symposium is one of the milestones of the celebration of the 60 years of IFOP”

Gastón Vidal, Head of the Aquaculture Division of IFOP, explained that the symposium is very relevant for us, due to the topics that are presented and the projections that the event has. Today it is clear that restocking or habitat improvement is the solution for the production of aquaculture or fisheries in the management areas and that is what motivates us to take charge of organizing this event, since we can share with colleagues who know and have experience in restocking that they contribute to us and encourage us to begin an improvement in the management of our ecosystems”

Dr. Luis Henríquez (IFOP) commented that the theme of the symposium is mainly about the limitation that the ecosystem may have to produce more resources, which depends a lot on the demand, therefore, as a biologist, As marine scientists, we need to contain the demand, creating ways to improve fish stocks and restorative aquaculture, which allows us to return some ecosystem services to the environment to slow down environmental degradation a little.
