100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>On April 18th, 2024, FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean organized the Event \u201c<strong>Getting ready for La Ni\u00f1a, advances and challenges to measure its impact on agri-food systems<\/strong>\u201d, in which international experts presented and more than 500 people attended virtually from all over the world and invited Dr. Jaime Letelier IFOP oceanography and environment department\u2019s head to speak.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Letelier presented the detrimental effects that \u201cEl Ni\u00f1o 2023\/24\u201d has brought on  northern Chile fishing sector, as well as evidence that the event has not yet withdrawn from National coasts and how potentially \u201cLa Ni\u00f1a\u201d Event \u201d Forecast for 2024, it could affect national fishing resources.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/letelier-2.png\" rel=\"28700\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-28702 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDr. Letelier highlighted Fisheries Development Institute\u2019s commitment during its 60 years to carry out national fisheries annual diagnosis, always within the context of  the ocean\u2019s normal annual variability and its ecosystems and, as at present, within  climatic change context, it has become necessary to reanalyze the historical record to understand<br \/>\nthe present and generate future diagnoses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/letelier-4.png\" rel=\"28700\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" 300px\" \/><\/a>In addition, it showed the effort made to understand and prepare for these events through the S.A.P.O Initiative, in conjunction with Peru and Ecuador as well as GEF Humboldt 2 project where Binational working groups from Peru and Chile promote joint efforts to understand the impacts of the environment on fisheries.<br \/>\n\u201cIf we had a longer period towards a normal transition period (\u2026) we should have a relatively expected ecological response (\u2026) but this abrupt change probably generates a greater stressor and from that point of view we have uncertainty about how
