{"id":26773,"date":"2023-06-29T10:24:50","date_gmt":"2023-06-29T14:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/?p=26773"},"modified":"2023-07-05T10:37:48","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T14:37:48","slug":"upla-e-ifop-promueven-la-conservacion-de-tortugas-marinas-con-escolares-de-valparaiso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/en\/upla-e-ifop-promueven-la-conservacion-de-tortugas-marinas-con-escolares-de-valparaiso\/","title":{"rendered":"UPLA and IFOP promote sea turtles\u2019s conservation  with schoolchildren from Valpara\u00edso"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/grupal-tortugas.jpg\" rel=\"laud\" rel=\"26773\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-26776 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/grupal-tortugas-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/grupal-tortugas-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/grupal-tortugas-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/grupal-tortugas-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/grupal-tortugas-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Within the framework of  World Sea Turtle Day and  Month of the Oceans, Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) and Universdidad de Playa Ancha  (UPLA) joined the task of disseminating these, highly migratory and human activity threatened  marine reptiles conservation.<\/p>\n<p>At Escuela Pablo Neruda in Valpara\u00edso, in  6th to 8th grade students, teachers and authorities from participating institutions presence, UPLA TV channel presented an audiovisual piece, based on IFOP\u2019s and Costa Rica\u2019s Fundaci\u00f3n Marviva, funded by  United States National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, aimed at reducing Eastern Pacific leatherbacks  incidental capture  in the longline fisheries of northern Chile  project .<\/p>\n<p>On the occasion, it was highlighted that there are 7 sea turtles species  in the world,  which Chile and Costa Rica share 5, such as  &#8220;La\u00fad&#8221; turtle, whose main cause of threat of extinction lies in incidental fishing, oceans pollution, tourism activities and illegal shell trade. This species is born in Costa Rica and travels to Chile to feed and grow for 8 years, and then return to the Caribbean to reproduce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/z\u00e1tate-tortugas.jpg\" rel=\"laud\" rel=\"26773\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-26774 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/z\u00e1tate-tortugas-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/z\u00e1tate-tortugas-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/z\u00e1tate-tortugas-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/z\u00e1tate-tortugas-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/z\u00e1tate-tortugas-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThat is why it is very relevant that children learn about these animals, what is their importance, ecological role and that, in addition, in Chile we have several species of sea turtles, which are native. Therefore, we also have a responsibility to be able to conserve them\u201d, said Patricia Z\u00e1rate IFOP head of Ecosystemic Approach of  Highly Migratory Resources Monitoring project,.<\/p>\n<p>From Universidad de  Playa Ancha, , Dr. Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 D\u00edaz, Environmental HUB researcher  coastal ecosystems specialist, who together with Z\u00e1rate spoke with the audience about  sea turtles conservation, highlighted the relationship with schoolchildren. \u201cFrom its mission, HUB is linked from science to the community and school communities are  a fundamental part. One of the projects we have, which is the Environmental Observatory, it  motivates us to connect with the territory from our research, in my case from marine ecology and coastal ecosystems in  Valpara\u00edso region and throughout Chile\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A playful closeup<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the activity, Eva Soto Engineering Sciences Sustainability Department Director  which belongs to the  Engineering Faculty, playfully asked the audience questions about the video\u2019s content, bringing students closer to the subject. &#8220;Our participation is associated with one of  development\u2019s  priority lines  related to natural resources and  flora and fauna presence, in this case marine fauna, together with valuing these reptiles that accompany us from Arica to Magallanes, through a playful methodology\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/laudita-e1688048652434.jpg\" rel=\"laud\" rel=\"26773\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-26777 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/laudita-e1688048652434-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/laudita-e1688048652434-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/laudita-e1688048652434-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/laudita-e1688048652434-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this sense, Galileo Mart\u00ednez from 8th grade, evaluated the activity positively. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s good, because we need to closely approach these instances as children to learn this type of things, about caring for the environment and specifically for turtles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Finally,  Mariangela Vignolo from  school\u2019s Technical Unit head, , affirmed that  shared material and contents opens a huge door to the students  knowledge. \u201cThat they arrive at the school (the institutions), allows them to get involved and to  learn more, it allows them to open up a world of possibilities.
