{"id":17546,"date":"2017-11-28T11:34:23","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T15:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/?p=17546"},"modified":"2017-11-29T12:29:36","modified_gmt":"2017-11-29T16:29:36","slug":"estudiantes-de-biologia-marina-recorren-las-instalaciones-de-ifop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/en\/estudiantes-de-biologia-marina-recorren-las-instalaciones-de-ifop\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine biology students visit IFOP facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/visita-nov-2.jpg\" rel=\"vis\" rel=\"17546\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17547 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/visita-nov-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, November 24<sup>th<\/sup>, a group of 25 marine biology students from Universidad de Valpara\u00edso, with Professor Fernando Balbont\u00edn, visited (IFOP) Fisheries Development Institute, to learn about IFOP&#8217;s work, with IFOP researchers direct contact and also to visit the institution modern laboratories.<\/p>\n<p>They were welcomed by Leonardo N\u00fa\u00f1ez IFOP Executive Director, Mauricio G\u00e1lvez Head of Division and researchers Leonardo Caballero, Patricia Z\u00e1rate and Christian Valero who explained and internalized the students about the \u00a0Institute\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Balbont\u00edn explained &#8220;within their training\u00a0 they have a\u00a0 subject called Fish Biology and in that field I have highlighted IFOP important mission which fulfills fisheries management, for that reason, I bring them to the source itself to met our researchers, get to know our work here and opening future \u00a0possibilities for internship or thesis, I also have to highlight IFOP entire team good disposition always receiving us kindly answering all \u00a0the students doubts<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/visita-nov-3.jpg\" rel=\"vis\" rel=\"17546\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17548 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/visita-nov-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Researcher Christian Valero added &#8220;The presentation aimed familiarizing students with techniques involved in estimating species age subjected to extraction regimes and this piece of information importance in fisheries management. Therefore, our laboratory processes description gave them a perspective of their possible future professional development &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Leonardo Caballero talk &#8220;consisted in a brief description of tasks and activities carried out by a researcher in Monitoring Project of Main Pelagic Fisheries of Central-South Zone of Chile, V-XI Regions, required by Institute for Fishing Development by Economy Undersecretariat and Fisheries and Aquaculture Undersecretariat, within our great program &#8220;<strong>Comprehensive advice for decision making in fisheries and aquaculture 2017 framework<\/strong>&#8220;. It is related to how fishing and biological information is taken on board vessels and in landing centers, through systematic and representative survey of industrial and artisanal fleet operation\u00a0 at V-XI Region. Dynamics monitoring of fishing fleet, current regulations and carrying out of research fishing in sardine or anchovy closure periods, which allows us to estimate recruitment or reproductive intensity magnitude and thereby advise Fishing Authority in management charge.<\/p>\n<p>This tour shows the students that any professional related to marine sciences should have relevant technical knowledge, such as navigation, maritime terminology and general fishing gear knowledge, as well as strengthen some skills or competencies, such as integrity, professional ethics and empathy, to be able to dialogue with fishermen in their language and to better understand coastal community\u2019s needs, with which they will have to relate quite frequently in their professional lives.
