On Wednesday, August 23rd and Thursday, August 24rth, in Puerto Varas city, the first International Seminar on Public Health and Red Tide was held: “Together Protecting Your Health”. A meeting organized by the Ministry of Health, Fisheries Promotion Institute, Subsecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) and the National Service of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca), which will analyze in these two days experiences and advances of Flowering of Harmful Algae monitoring programs (FAN) and marine toxins, as well as mitigation and control actions to address challenges in areas such as innovation, technology and productive sectors.<\/p>\n

Leonardo N\u00fa\u00f1ez, IFOP’s Executive Director, highlighted “The creation of a national coverage new center for harmful algae studies, located in Los Lagos Region (Puerto Montt) as an effort being made by IFOP with CORFO financing to focus, deepen and better understand the processes of the red tides that are occurring with intensity in the coasts of Chile lately. We want this center to be an instance for study and knowledge of this phenomenon to facilitate communication and effective work with national and international research networks ”<\/p>\n

During this activity IFOP researchers Dr. Leonardo Guzm\u00e1n and Dr. Oscar Espinoza held their expositions; Dr. Guzm\u00e1n presented “Unraveling a complex Alexandrian catenella system and paralyzing toxin<\/strong>” Dr. Espinoza on Thursday presented “Observation, modeling and prediction as a form of control and mitigation of red tide monitoring in IFOP 2006 – 2017<\/strong> ”<\/p>\n
