From the depths of the ocean to the stars! Living beings migrate for food. The Regional Cooperative Project of CONICYT Valparaiso and the Fonck Museum are united once again to open the conversation with scientists from Universidad de Valpara\u00edso (UV), the Institute of Fisheries Promotion (IFOP), Universidad de Playa Ancha (UPLA) and Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Valpara\u00edso (PUCV). On this occasion Dr. Patricia Z\u00e1rate Bustamante from IFOP will offer the talk “Migrations of marine animals”.<\/p>\n

“Migrations of marine animals”<\/strong><\/p>\n

A large variety of marine animals migrate in the nautical environment, sometimes they reach oceanic islands or productive areas on the coast to feed themselves, other times they migrate looking for their birth and reproduction areas, crossing the borders of different countries. Due to recent technological developments, there are several methodologies available to track marine migrants along large expanses of sea, even as they move to remote and inhospitable areas. These movements require efficient orientation and navigational skills such as magnetic and \/ or olfactory keys, they also depend on other, simpler navigation methods.<\/p>\n

About the researcher<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Patricia Z\u00e1rate is a Marine Biologist from Universidad Cat\u00f3lica del Norte and a PhD in zoology from University of Florida (United States). At the beginning of her professional career she worked as a scientific diver and researcher at the Institute of Fisheries Promotion. Later, she worked as a researcher at the Charles Darwin Foundation in the Galapagos Islands Ecuador, where she was in charge of sea turtles and sharks studies for 8 years. She is currently a Senior Researcher at the Fisheries Development Institute where she is the leader of the Biodiversity Group, the Highly Migratory Species Tagging Program and research related to the impact of fisheries on the marine ecosystem.
\nThe link between IFOP and Explora Valparaiso allows to strengthen the scientific dissemination and enhance the concrete contribution, which through this associative project is carried out to the regional scientific culture.<\/p>\n

Connecting men and women dedicated to research of the country’s fishing and aquaculture sector with the community, with a sustainable development perspective that allows and favors the social appropriation of science and technology for citizens to make responsible and friendly decisions with our environment.
